The garden at MUSBURY BARTON, near Axminster, EX13 8BB (above) will be open on June 18th and 19th from 2.00 to 5.00pm. This is a glorious, wooded garden in a valley complete with stream. Admission £5 to include tea on the terrace – children under 14 free. There will be plants, cakes and preserves for sale. All profits to the Send a Cow charity.

Steep paths and steps mean wheelchair access is limited to the terrace from which there are fine views of much of the garden. Dogs on leads are welcome. For more information contact Jenny Reynolds on 01837 861678 or email Jenneo78@gmail.com.

* Three of the Society’s Committee of 12 are retiring – they are longstanding, hardworking members who feel, understandably, it is time for a rest. The Committee has therefore shrunk to such a size that we cannot put on a Summer Show. It is beyond current capabilities.

We have organised a good range of outings and talks for 2016-17 so our calendar has many highlights, but we have reached our manpower limit. We are therefore appealing for more committee members and volunteers, immediately, or the Summer Show will have to be cancelled. The cut-off date for this decision is mid-December.

Please get in touch if you can help in any capacity: Jenny Harding 01297 444034 or jennyhlyme@hotmail.co.uk or in person at the AGM.

February Meeting

st mary AldermSt Mary Aldermanbury Garden in Love Lane, London EC2

DATE Wednesday February 25th at 7.30pm
TALK Hidden Gardens of London
VENUE Uplyme Village Hall

Bob Ayers’ illustrated talk ‘Hidden Gardens of London’ includes such gems as Fountain Court in Middle Temple, featured in Charles Dickens’ Martin Chuzzlewit, and St Mary Aldermanbury Garden in Love Lane EC2 with its imposing bust of Shakespeare.

Bob’s knowledge stems from his 30-year career in the City of London police force when, in his spare time, he qualified as a tour guide, cultivating a special knowledge of London’s gardens. He still finds time to conduct London tours in between his current vocation as a legal aid lawyer and the quieter life of running a smallholding with his wife in Burton Bradstock.

Ballot on change of Society’s name to ‘Uplyme and Lyme Regis Gardeners’ *
Any Other Business

* It was agreed at the March AGM of the Society that a proposal to change its name should be put forward at the AGM to be held on November 26th, 2014. The main reason for the proposed change is to shorten the name, but also to remove the word ‘Horticultural’ – a term that has been thought to put off many potential new members, some of whom have expressed the opinion that it is elitist and implies the Society may be too specialist. The name of Uplyme and Lyme Regis Gardeners has been proposed because it describes succinctly the main interest of the membership.

The ballot papers will be counted and result announced immediately.
